Today was a short day on site. We only worked a half day so we could go and see other projects that Habitat Cambodia is working on.
We started the day with a house blessing. We had all written a small prayer or blessing on a piece of paper and read it to Mr. Penh and Mrs. Sing and had it translated for them.
After we all finished reading the papers, we placed them in the foundation of the staircase of the house so that they would always be a part of the house.
We started our work day by installing the horizontal supports for 2 of the walls and back filling the foundation of the stairs.
We also built the stairs going into the toilet and started to install the bamboo floor.
Before lunch we had a roof beam raising ceremony. Mr. Penh tied offerings of fruit and a lotus flower and attached money.
We all cheered as they raised the beam and put it into place.
We ended up finishing about half of the floor before we had to leave.
We also got the outside of the bathroom steps covered with their first coat of cement.
We left the build site for the day and trekked over to another build site, and ended up at a local school which was provided with a water filtration system in part from Habitat Cambodia.
We also travelled to another town to see the local water co-op that was also provided in part by Habitat Cambodia. The community has the opportunity to sell the water to help make money.
All in all it was a very productive day. Tomorrow we will start to put up the outside walls and finish the floor and the toilet.
